Introduction

The George Museum, located in the town of George in the Western Cape, is a cultural history museum dedicated to preserving the rich history of the town and its surrounding region. The museum was started by Charles Sayers, the owner and long-time editor of the George & Knysna Herald, in 1967 as a “Mini Museum” in a single room. Over the years, the museum has grown and evolved, attracting the attention of officialdom and attaining provincial-aided museum status as a cultural history museum for the region. The museum was recently renovated and officially reopened on 24 March 2023. See the gallery at the end of this article for a sneak peak of the renovated spaces.

About the Museum

Charles Sayers was a passionate collector of all aspects of his hometown’s history, with a special interest in old mechanical musical instruments. In 1967, he opened his “Mini Museum” to the public, housed in a single room next to a café in Courtenay Street. The museum was well-received by the local community and encouraged by local authorities, Sayers moved the museum to the first George Town House – the administrative building next to the market square which dated back to 1847.

The growing popularity of the museum led to another move, this time to the former drostdy building, which had been the original magistrate’s residence and office in the young town. Adrian van Kervel, the first magistrate, built the building in 1812-1815. In 1826 it burnt down but was re-built and became the legendary Victoria Hotel in the late 19th century. In 1972, the building was sold to the George Municipality and in 1976, the museum was established there. Today, the museum offers visitors a unique glimpse into the cultural and social heritage of the region.
