Introduction

The Goetz-Fleischack Museum, located in the North West province, is a fascinating historical site that showcases the rich cultural heritage of South Africa. This museum is a unique example of a typical town house that was built between the 1850s and 1880s around the New Market Square in Potchefstroom.

About the Museum

The Goetz-Fleischack Museum was originally the house of Andreas Marthinus Goetz, who was the magistrate of Potchefstroom between 1870 and 1881. This property was declared a national monument in 1985 and has been a museum ever since. The property consists of the house, wagon house, stables, and cowshed. In front of the house, there is a water furrow that was extended into the property with stones to water the orchards at the back.

Built in the 1950s, the house depicts the period when AM Goetz’s daughter, Johanna Hermina Goetz, and her husband Albert Reinhold Fleischack, an attorney by trade, lived there. The museum’s exhibits include furniture, ceramics, and artwork from this period, as well as information on the history of Potchefstroom and the surrounding area.
