Introduction

Nestled in the picturesque Plettenberg Bay is a unique and impressive destination that is a must-visit for anyone interested in textile production and sustainability. The Mungo Mill, opened in 2017, offers visitors an opportunity to witness first-hand the production process of beautifully designed homeware textiles, woven with care for the environment and the local community.

About the Mill

Mungo’s story began with just two restored antique looms in 1998. Today, the Mungo Mill is a thriving hub of production, designed to showcase the entire production process and encourage transparency in textile manufacturing. The mill is a one-of-a-kind building conceived by Dax and Stuart Holding, and brought to life by architect Andrea Christoforetti.

What Can You See?

Visitors to the Mungo Mill are encouraged to take a self-guided tour of the premises, which features a cross-section of weaving techniques and technology, from pre-Industrial Revolution to present day. The mill houses a collection of 16 restored looms from different weaving eras, which can be viewed from an elevated viewing deck that weaves from the walkway into the mill.

A large central, double-volume room houses the looms, which can be seen in operation, giving visitors an opportunity to watch Mungo’s team of weavers and seamstresses at work. The entire production process, from warping and weaving to cutting, making, and trimming, is on display, allowing visitors to gain a unique insight into the world of textile production.

Interesting Facts

  • In 2020, the Mungo Mill underwent an audit for Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification, becoming South Africa’s first GOTS-certified textile weaving mill.
  • The mill’s unique design is especially worth noting, with a wooden slatted “skin” that wraps around an elevated walkway, inspired by the overlapping warp threads and the curved facade emulating fabric folds.
  • The building’s moat, inspired by the age-old art of milling, snakes around the entrance and under the “skin” of the building, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal.
