Historical Background
History of the Beaufort West Museum
For many years, the Beaufort West Museum was an informal museum consisting of two rooms. It was established in 1939 and was only open to visitors on Friday and Saturday nights. However, on April 1, 1977, the museum became a provincial government-aided museum and soon after, the museum complex was expanded to include the old Dutch Reformed parsonage and the old town hall.

The Beaufort West Museum complex consists of three buildings, all of which are national monuments. The Old Dutch Reformed Mission Church and rectory were built in 1871-1872 and the old town hall was built in 1865. All three buildings are situated in Donkin Street, the main street of Beaufort West.

Significance of the Buildings
The Beaufort West Museum is unique in that it houses the Chris Barnard Original collection. Professor Christiaan Neethling Barnard, the world-renowned heart surgeon, was born in the rectory next to the Dutch Reformed Mission Church where his father served as a missionary. The parsonage has been restored and furnished as it was during the time of the Barnard family, and Professor Barnard’s ashes are buried in the garden.
Museum Complex
A tour of the Beaufort West Museum Complex includes three distinct buildings, all situated in close proximity to each other:
The Old Town Hall
The old town hall was built in 1865 and was the first town hall in the Karoo to be built and put into use in 1866. Designed by James Bisset, the building was used as a hospital during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. Today, the old town hall houses the Chris Barnard Exhibition, the Beaufort West Pictorial Exhibition, the Professor Chris Barnard Family Life Exhibition, and the Napoleonic Relics, which were a gift from the city of Paris to be used by Professor Barnard on St. Helena, where he was banned.

The Dutch Reformed Mission Church
The Dutch Reformed Mission Church was built in 1871–1872 under the supervision of Reverend Teske and served as the church where Dr. Barnard’s father served as a missionary to the community. The church now displays panels of exhibitions explaining the lives of the Coloured Community and their segregation and later forced removal in the 1960s. The church also displays a plague honoring Isaac Dyobha, one of the legends who died in the SS Mendi, for serving a congregational church in Beaufort West.

The Parsonage
The Parsonage is the birthplace of Professor Chris Barnard and his siblings. Today, the house has been restored and furnished as it was in the time of the Barnard family. A panel exhibition tells the stories of all the reverends who served in the church, and the late Professor Barnard’s ashes are buried in the old parsonage garden, which can also be viewed.
