About the Museum
The Clanwilliam Museum is situated at the end of the Main Road in Clanwilliam and is known locally as the OuTronk, meaning “old jail.” The building dates back to 1808 and was originally used as a prison with two rooms for prisoners. The building was renovated in 1877 to become a larger jail, and in 1987, the transformation into a museum began.
Today, the Clanwilliam Museum offers visitors a fascinating journey through the history of Clanwilliam and the surrounding area. Each room presents a unique story, from the archeological history of the region to the unique industries that put Clanwilliam on the map, such as Rooibos tea and “Velskoen” shoes. Visitors can also learn about the early Irish settlers who played a leading role in the area up to the first half of the 1900s.
