Introduction
South Africa is a country steeped in history, and one of the interesting chapters of its past is its military history. From the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 to the Anglo-Boer Wars of 1881 and 1899-1902, the country has seen its fair share of military conflict. One fascinating place to learn about this history is the Fort Amiel Museum in KwaZulu-Natal.
About the Museum
Fort Amiel Museum is located in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was constructed in 1876 by Major Charles Frederick Amiel and soldiers of the 80th Staffordshire Volunteers as a fort and lookout post for the British. Although it never served that purpose, it was used during the First Boer War as a garrison for the King’s Own Royal Regiment.
