About the Museum
The Tsonga Kraal Museum is designed to represent the cultural products and building styles of the North Tsonga tribes, which were comprised of refuge groups from the Southern parts of Mozambique. The museum showcases a range of different building styles that have been used over the past 200 years, including different types of sleeping huts, grain, cooking huts, stores, the ancestral tree, a sacrificial hut, a goat hut, a chicken hut, and a cattle kraal.

Visitors can explore the homestead of the chief, which served as the basis for the kraal’s design. The layout of the kraal follows a set pattern, although many variations can be found in the surrounding area. The museum is built entirely from traditional materials, including mopane poles bound to mopane bark, which form the framework of most huts. Clay from anthills was used for the floors and walls, and different colored soil was used to decorate the walls.
