About the Museum

The Old Provost Military Prison, located in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, was constructed in the early 1830s as part of Governor Sir Benjamin D’Urban’s defensive plan for the Cape Colony. Initially serving as a fortified barrack establishment, the prison gained its name from its association with the Provost Marshall, who oversaw the custody and punishment of military offenders.
