Interesting Facts
- Symbolic Steel Tubes: Outside the monument, you’ll encounter 35 rusted steel tubes, left intentionally unpainted. These tubes represent the 35 lives lost in the tragic air crash. During the rainy season, the rust stains the concrete base, symbolising the blood of the deceased and the tears of the Mozambican people.
- Aircraft Remnants: Surrounding the monument are various remnants of the ill-fated aircraft, including an engine just inside the main gate, a complete engine, and a large section of the fuselage placed in a pit-like area adjacent to the steel tubes. These artifacts serve as a haunting reminder of the tragic event and the lives it claimed.
- A Journey Through History: Inside the museum, visitors embark on a poignant journey through the Mozambican liberation struggle. President Samora Machel’s life is unveiled through his family tree, shedding light on his roles as a son, husband, father, soldier, and statesman. The museum also features photographic images of the 35 victims and selected high-level portraits of President Machel with various political leaders and heads of state.
- A Solemn Tribute: The lower floor of the museum presents a striking and colorful tribute. Here, wreckage pieces are artfully assembled to form a symbolic grave, adorned with flowers. Other fragments adorn the walls as murals, while a life-size statue of President Machel, constructed from smaller aircraft pieces, stands as a poignant sentinel, facing the symbolic grave.
