About the Museum

Originally built in 1905 as the residence of the rector of the Theological School of the Dutch Reformed Church, the Totius House Museum provides a glimpse into the life and times of the influential du Toit family. Professor Jacob Daniël du Toit, who wrote under the pseudonym Totius, was a renowned poet and translator of the Bible into Afrikaans. The house reflects the period when the du Toit family inhabited it and is a typical example of Edwardian architecture.

After extensive restoration, the museum was opened to the public in 1977 and was declared a national monument, alongside the other three buildings in the complex, in 1980. Visitors can explore the house’s beautifully restored interiors, which feature period furnishings and artifacts. The museum also hosts a range of events and exhibitions throughout the year, providing an engaging cultural experience.
