Introduction
If you’re looking for a fun and unique way to introduce young children to South Africa’s rich heritage, the Winelands Light Railway Park is a must-visit destination. Although not a typical museum, this park offers a gateway for children and young adults to appreciate South Africa’s collective heritage in a fun and interactive way.

About the Park
Located on the R304 in Koelenhof, Stellenbosch, the Winelands Light Railway Park first opened its doors on December 14, 2019. This picturesque park is specifically designed to create fun memories for parents and children by sharing an exclusive outdoor experience. One train ride lasts approximately 7 minutes and takes you on a 760m journey within the train park, including some tunnel fun.
The park features steam trains that haul passengers as well as two electric engines called Dozer and Fritz, which run when the steam trains are off duty. The park’s lawns are very inviting for a picnic, so perhaps pack a picnic blanket, some treats and sunscreen for the day. When the kids are tired of riding the train, they can play at the jungle gym area and sandpit, which is shaded and equipped like a real little kitchen.

The park provides two entrance fee options, both are on a per person basis. The standard rate includes access to the park and one complimentary train ride. However, if you planning on spending some time at the Park, it offers an option with unlimited train rides as well. Tickets and train rides can be purchased directly at the park entrance, with card facilities available. The park also has food and drink facilities available from the park’s kiosk and food truck.
