Introduction

Nestled in the heart of Upington, a charming town located on the banks of the Orange River in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, lies the Kalahari-Oranje Museum, also known as the Donkie Museum. This historical gem, adjacent to the Red Ox Steakhouse in Schröder Street, boasts original missionary buildings dating back to 1875, erected by Reverend Christiaan Schröder. If you’re interested in learning more about the rich cultural history of the Lower Orange Valley, the Khomani San people, and the unselfish contributions of donkeys during the pioneer days, then this museum is an absolute must-see.

About the Museum

The museum offers visitors a glimpse into the past, with household items dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century on display. The original manse, built by Reverend Schröder in 1871, has been renovated but still retains its historical charm. Visitors will also note the thick walls and lowered door frames, as Reverend Schröder was a mere 1.67 m (5’6”).

The church hall, built in 1946, houses an exhibition of farming and agricultural items relating to the history of the Lower Orange Valley, as well as artefacts of the Khomani San and original gems from the region. The museum also houses a life-sized statue of a donkey, sculptured in bronze by Hennie Potgieter. The statue pays tribute to the unselfish efforts of donkeys in developing the region during the pioneer days of the 19th century.

Interesting Facts
