Interesting Facts
- The history of the Urquhart House dates back to the early 19th century when Johan Hendrik Greyling acquired the large erf on which it stands today. This makes it one of the earliest privately owned plots in Graaff-Reinet. The house itself is believed to have been erected between 1806 and 1821, showcasing architectural styles prevalent during that period.
- Throughout its history, the Urquhart House has passed through the hands of notable individuals. One such owner was Charles James Spiller, an 1820 Settler and secretary of the local Midland Agency and Trust Company. Tragically, Spiller’s life was cut short in a tragic murder in May 1866. David Sebastian Martin Casper Carel Schultz, a prominent businessman, later played a significant role in modernizing the house to align with the architectural trends of the late 19th century.
- The house derives its name from Herbert Urquhart M.B.E., a beloved Graaff-Reinet businessman and the town’s longest-serving mayor. Serving in office for an impressive 21 consecutive years from 1915 to 1936, Urquhart’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of the town. The Urquhart family’s connection to the house continued until the municipality acquired the property from the Urquhart Estate in 1964.
