Introduction

The Graaff-Reinet Museum is located in the Eastern Cape and was established in 1956. The museum is located in five different sites, with buildings dating back to the early 1800s, that contain a rich collection of the town’s cultural and natural heritage, including fossils, rock art, period furniture, and contemporary history exhibitions. The museum is the fifth largest Province-aided museum in the Eastern Cape with a collective floor space of almost 4000 m², making it a major tourist attraction in the Camdeboo area.

About the Museum

The Graaff-Reinet Museum was originally the Reinet House, a Dutch Reformed Church parsonage built in 1812. After serving as a home for ministers and as a boarding establishment for girls, the building was bought by the Graaff-Reinet Publicity Association in 1947 and restoration work was started in 1952.
